Juan Atkins' "Wax Trax! Mastermix Volume One" final tracklisting (18:24 Oct 7, 1998)

After a series of delays, Juan Atkins' "Wax Trax! Mastermix" CD mixdown is now scheduled for release November 17 on TVT. Here's the final tracklisting:

This 69 minute mix was originally scheduled to drop in the summer and include 22 tracks; appearing on the final version are 19. Atkins dropped "Psychosomatic" (Metroplex) from his Model 500 and replaced it with 1997's "Nature Of The Best" from Metroplex act Black Noise (Mike Grant and Damon "Baby Pop" Peterson). Scheduled originally as well, but not on the final version, is Infiniti's "Body Oil" (another Atkins cut; this would have been an exclusive but now appears on Infiniti's "Skynet" full length--out now on Berlin's Tresor and soon on Brooklyn Music Limited domestically for North Americans). Also dropped from the initial selection was Ridis' "Triangle" on Berlin's Basic Channel imprint.

"The CD is packaged in a silver and blue digipack," TVT's Adam Shore explains, "and includes a separate 10 page booklet which reprints Mike Shallcross' cover story on Juan from The Wire magazine. Juan mixed the records live and did a very minimum of edits. It feels raw, dirty, and live, with lots of cutting and scratching and crazy transitions." The result, Shore says, is "at times soulful, frantic, minimal, and funky. It should make you happy."

Atkins will be DJing on a six city tour in conjunction with the release of the mix CD, including a New York stop planned to include appearances on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Shore is putting together a TVT web page focusing on the Atkins "Mastermix" with additional info on the recording and links to sites high in Detroit Techno content. Details have yet to be confirmed, but the Cognition Audioworks site is likely to be included.

Juan Atkins talked to Cognition Audioworks in early July about this upcoming mix release, the importance of Kraftwerk's 1998 tour, the state of techno as we near the year 2000, his upcoming Model 500 "Mind & Body" album and "Be Brave" single on R & S records, his Infiniti project (reviewed here in the albums section), and his thoughts on electronic music in general. He will be our featured guest on an upcoming edition of Andrew Duke's In The Mix (show 578).
