In the early 80's a new machine-driven music was developing in the post industrial motor city of Detroit. Techno, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson are the well documented 'techno' trinity responsible ; figureheads of a musical movement which has helped shape dance music globally but still manages to remain a relatively underground entity in their native America. Although each pushed forward in their own particular way, it was Juan, inspired by the precision programming of Kraftwerk and the spaced out grooves of Parliament and Funkadelic, who was the first to come to prominence.

It was in 1981 when Juan's techno-electro outfit Cybertron, formed with Rick Davis, released their first single'Alleys of Your Mind' on Deep Space. The duo received some success but in 1985 they parted ways and Juan started working solo as MODEL 500. Setting up his own Metroplex label, he released a string of minimalist hi-tech dance music gems such as 'No UFO's', 'The Chase', 'Night Drive', and 'Interference'. However it wasn't until the early 90's, when Model 500 came to R&S, that releases such as the CLASSICS compilation and the brilliant mini-album SONIC SUNSET received the attention they deserved. But by the time Juan's first real full-length album DEEP SPACE came out in May '95, his sound had developed further, its soulful quality making it one of the most acclaimed dance albums of the time.

'Be Brave', the preview single to his long awaited second album, carries on from the seductive quality of DEEP SPACE's 'The Flow'. A Barry White-esque male vocal growls under a soaring female vocal giving it a multi layered soulful edge ; sweet but subversive. Gentle though it may sound, have no fear that Juan has gone soft as the B-side's 'Psychosomatic' will testify, where his dark rhythmical electronics are in full evidence.

Remixes by the inimitable François Kevorkian, KMA and Gus Gus are on their way, leading up to the much awaited album release March '99.
