QUANTUM LEAP
FOTOPLAY
Elektrolux/DM/CD
As the age of electronic music marches on, it's the acts playing with a broad sound palette that continue to be the ones to watch. There's little fun in a one trick pony, and Quantum Leap have obviously heard this adage. Jumping right in with the title track, think cerebral Detroit techno, perhaps Carl Craig, fused with a rumbling break and you're in the right area. But where so many are content to sample the familiar, Quantum Leap are programming their own shuffles and shimmies. "Ultraviolet" gives us a dose of dark, pulsing electro, while "Reflections" and "Interstellar" are contemplative downtempo pieces. Save for the four on the floor of the track which closes the album, the emphasis is on homemade breaks at a variety of tempos, many with an electro edge. Overall, "Fotoplay" is a rewarding listen. --Andrew Duke
