House Report for September 1997 (compiled August 1, 1997)
by Andrew Duke

Most labels take a break during the summer months and then starting pumping out the product in August. This year has been no different and with so many new releases dropping, here's a brief overview of what's available as we move into fall.

The spotlight continues to shine brightly on the talent emerging out of France. The Parisian arm of BMG has a fine compilation in "The French House Fever", 13 tracks from the likes of Etienne De Crecy, Motorbass, and Daphreephunkateers. The Distance label draws on some artists from our side of the globe, Chicago in fact, for some gotta-have-it grooves. Check the mixes of "Motivation" from Bernard Badie featuring Louis Lang on vocals and the deep house delights of DJ Mel (Melvin Gentry) and his "There's A Place (Deep In Your Heart)" EP.

If you want to take it even deeper, go for the tribal "Motion Pictures" EP from Big Screen (Affie Yussuf) on Pagan America, Memphis' Velocity imprint and the sweet sounds of the singing preacher on Urban Fidelity's "Positivibes" doublepack, and the way out there loopiness of Gemini's "Beyond Gone" foursome on Disko B out of Munich. Moodyman is in top form on the "Dem Young Sconies" twelve for Detroit's Planet E, and Hard Trax stay true to their name for "The Revival" EP (Family Clubhouse/Brooklyn). Coco, Steel & Lovebomb, lead by DJ Magazine's head honcho, finally follow up their groundbreaking debut with the "New World" full-length for the Other label, and if you like New York house and you don't have these seminal singles all ready, you must acquire "Club Nervous: First Five Years Of House Classics". Makes me feel like singin', indeed.
