Cognition House/Tech House Report and Chart for May 1999
While the spotlight shines on acts like Cassius and Daft Punk, there's plenty of groovesome material being released on independent labels in France from talents that have yet to reach a worldwide audience. David Duriez and Ludovic Llorca have been producing material on credible labels like F Communications and Apricot for some time and now as MDLM provide the initial release for the Brique Rogue imprint with the "A Main Key"/"No Time To Lose" 12". Vitamine is another new French label; Cox 6's "Signez-La!" is the first single, a gorgeous chunk of funk with stolen Sly Stone vocal snatches, realized best in the mix from Serial Records' Demon Richie & DJ Rork. On American shores, King Britt continues to amaze. This time he's worked his magic on a track from Miles Davis for the forthcoming remixes album on Columbia. Check it out and you'll hear some heavenly house innovation. Similarly deep, but on a vocal cut, are the Joe Claussell versions of Glen Scott's "Heaven" promoed on Giant Step. Jacob dives down for some jazzy bliss on his "Misunderstood" 4tracker for Chicago's Nite Life Collective, while Open Door's "Lights" and Dubtribe Sound System's "Samba Dub" are run through with live instrumentation that is certainly worth a listen. Firing up the filters for some disco cutups are Paul Johnson's "Burnin' For Your Yearnin'" on Dust Traxx, DJ Jacq's "The Greenhouse" EP (Real Estate), and "Unity" from the Soundscapers (UK Kingpin), complete with a mix from Lil' Devious. New from New York's Jellybean are Soul Solution featuring Carolyn Harding's "Let It Rain", a garage stormer, and the hardhitting "Work" from C & R Project (grabbing a bit of LNR's "Work It To The Bone" classic). And hitting us with the futurefunk you'll find Octave One's alter ego, Random Noise Generation, with "Instrument Of Change" on Detroit's 430 West, and the extended and Ian Pooley remixes of Chaser's "Tall Stories" (UK Soma). House albums of note this month include Kevin Yost's "One Starry Night" (UK Distance), which includes 3 new tracks and 5 previously released goodies, "A Story Of Deepness" from Glenn Underground (US Nite Life Collective), and "The Groove I Have" (US Moody), ten new songs from the ubiquitous Johnson. Perfect for starting an evening off is "The Nervous Cocktail Mix" with lounge ready material from Byron Stingily, Kerri Chandler, and more, the Frankie Feliciano mix CD ("Club Nervous Vol 2"), or the quality housers from France from the likes of Eglantine, Rork, and DJ Bertrand compiled on "Serial Recordings Vol. 2". New Jersey's Kings Of Tomorrow (Sandy Rivera and Jay Sinister) have some of their best productions and remixes put together on "The Beginning" (UK Distance), mostly from their Deep Vision and Blackwiz imprints, in preparation for their forthcoming album of new material. Speaking of the Distance label, out this month is a mix CD from the ever busy Romanthony, August will see an album from USG (Ron Trent and Anthony Nicholson), and Detroit's Alton Miller unveils an album in September.
